In addition to the events below, art work will appear and disappear across the city thanks to our commissioned artists… More events are being added all the time so come back soon!
Each day there will be drop-in conversations and an invitation to swap skills with the festival artists from 12.00 – 15.00.
Launching this year’s festival, 3 resident artists at FESTIVAL31 (this year from Burundi and Iran) will explore Under the Surface of the refugee experience and the production of art in extreme conditions, encompassing 3D imaging and design, sculpture & painting installation and graphic art.
Taking the Tate Exchange space on the 1st floor of Tate Liverpool for the first week of FESTIVAL31, the artists works and related interactive activities and conversations daily push our understanding and perceptions of the personal and social experiences. Asking us to explore how artists with limited finances and creative resources can continue to produce and commit to their profession and creative voice whilst challenged by displacement and exile.
Responding to this year’s theme, these three inspiring artists explore their response as artists, as refugees and as human beings to ‘Under the Surface’.
Artist & Architect Urbain Barikumwe, Sculptor Benyamin Roghanchi and Graphic Artist & Photographer Afshin Amini open a narrative of displacement and personal journeys through this within their work.
Join us for a focused debate on Saturday 23 June (or listen in live online) and drop in to maker sessions with the artists and festival curator on Sunday 24 June. All activities take place between 12.00 – 15.00.
